I have been biting my nails for as long as I can remember.
It's a horrible habit that I've always hated and been embarrassed about, however I've never been able to quit. My way of getting around it for a long time has been doing my own artificial nails. I used to get my nails done in high school at a nail salon but with how badly I bite them, the nail techs always made my cuticles bleed and I would leave in pretty immense pain. After taking cosmetology in high school and being taught to apply acrylic nails, I decided I was fully capable of doing my own nails. Acrylic isn't really something that you can easily do to yourself with your non-dominant hand so I decided to go the "glue and go" route. I believe I've mastered this application after so many years so trying to explain it in detail is weird because I just do it all on auto-pilot.
Most people who meet me think my nails are my own and are shocked to hear that they're fake. I'm constantly being asked if I just got my nails done and I'm always super honest and admit that they're fakes that I did at home. I've gotten quite a few people in my personal life to give it a try including my Mom. She finally stopped going to get her nails done at a salon after getting a fungus and has been doing these on and off, when she needs pretty nails for an occasion.
I, however, wear them pretty much everyday of my life. I hate being seen without "nails" and when one comes off I immediately glue it back on. When it's time to re-do them, I try my hardest to get them painted and applied as quickly as I can since I know I'll bite my nails in the meantime.
This would be the reason that after all these years I still have nasty, short nails. They never grow enough in between sets for me to leave them alone and think that I've finally getting somewhere with my own nails.
So until the day when I finally stop biting my nails, I will continue to use this technique to have pretty, presentable nails.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Supplies: nails, glue, polish, nail clippers, emery board
my favorite nail kit is this one from Kiss in short square and my glue of preference is Nailene Ultra Quick
I keep the Kiss glue on hand in case I run out of the Nailene brand but hardly use it because I feel like the Nailene brand holds better - personal preferences

Step one: Sort through each size and find the right fit for each finger
I knew I was changing my nails so I had fun with my two new Zoya polishes the night before I took these photos
Step two: hold each nail by the tip and paint polish from tip to cuticle end
Step three: After each nail is painted, let dry. Paint additional coats if needed, let dry.
*One of the most important things I can tell you is to step back and let the polish fully dry. I will usually paint the nails right before bed, go to sleep then wake up in the morning and finish the remaining steps. The reason this is so important is because you will be applying pressure to these nails after polishing and if they aren't dry enough then you will have fingerprints or smudges.
Step four: Apply one to two drops of glue near the cuticle end of the nail and apply them immediately to your nail. Use pressure to release any bubbles that may form in the glue. Hold for a few seconds then repeat with each additional nail
*Another important tip is not to apply too much glue; a little goes farther than you think. If you apply too much then you run the chance of having excess seep out from underneath the nail and the possibility of it getting on your other fingers, them getting stuck or glue getting everywhere. Peeling nail glue off your fingers is not really fun so use the glue sparingly.
Step five: Once each nail is set with glue, clip them to your desired length.
Step six: File each nail to finish the edges
And there you go!
This is how I do my nails almost every week. I can go longer than one week but sometimes I get tired of the polish I'm wearing and want to apply a fresh set. I am known to change just my polish during the week and I have a very steady left (non-dominant) hand so I do that pretty often as well so that one kit of nails lasts me longer. I do buy this french nail kit when I need natural looking nails and apply them the same way sans polish. I used those exact french nails for my bridal portraits and my wedding.
One of these kits has 100 nails and not all of them fit my fingers, so some go unused. Those are the ones that I test new polishes on before using them and try out new looks. I like to see what colors look best with which glitters this way before I commit to actually doing them on the nails I apply.
I hope this answers any and all questions I've gotten ever since I first told everyone that I wore fake nails. I really just apply these without much thought so I may have missed something that you have a question about.
Let me know if you try it and how you like it!
yes, they're fake . . .

When I wear nails, I always get the Kiss brand that you glue-on too. So much cheaper than going to a salon. I get the same comments... Everyone who compliments them are shocked they are fake and just glue-ons from a box.I love them though. For my engagement pics and my wedding, I used them. No one knew the difference unless I told them!
OK...this is pretty awesome. I would have NEVER known this is how you do your nails!!! Seriously, Jenn...they look SO NATURAL!!!! If I had the patience to do this on my own, I would. Maybe I should just give it a try? I get kinda tired of going to get my nails done every 2 weeks!!!
I love that color that you have on in one of the 1st pics...that really pretty pink/purple...what color is that??
Heart you!
Oh wow!! I thought you went to the nail salon and had these done! You do an amazing job!!
I get my nails done every two weeks and haven't had my real nails since way before having Kinsley. I'm the same as you when it comes to biting my nails. Plus I don't feel girly at all if I don't have my nails done!
Thanks for sharing! XO
Wow! You are SKILLED. Question....How does taking them off work? Are your nails sort of damaged after like after acrylics/gels come off? Do you soak them? Pick them off? Just wondering b/c that's my only problem with doing all the fake nail stuff even though they are SO pretty! Props to you!
That's pretty awesome! I used to have a real bad habit of biting my nails and having to go to the salon every two weeks but that got to be way too expensive! I finally broke myself of the nail biting habit!
I still can't paint my own nails with my non-dominate (left) hand worth a crap, lol.
This is awesome! I bite my nails horribly and they always make my cuticles bleed at the nail salon. I will definitely have to try this. Thanks for the tip :).
Oh wow that is pretty cool! I would never think your short nails were fake but I like that you keep them short.
Wow! Your nails look great! I can see why people ask you if they are your real nails!
Wow that's crazy amazing! I would never ever have guessed that they are fake!
Wow you are so good! That must save you a fortune! I do not have steady hands - I can't even apply nail polish without making it a hot mess. You're a lucky girl! Nails look awesome!
Thanks for the tutorial! It was very helpful! Your nails always look great! I love switching mine up too!
Your nails always look amazing and I would have never guessed that your nails were fake. Great tutorial and I might give it a try sometime instead of going and paying to get them done.
This is sooo neat. I'm really wanting "nails" put on because I'm always biting my nails too! Can you answer a question though, well maybe two. haha How do they hold up/how long do they hold up with showering..etc? and If you need to take them off/how often do you need to take them off??
Thanks doll!

Wow I never really thought of doing that. I don't like to get acrylic on my nails as its really bad for them but I might try this!
I love this ... I am seriously considering running out and buying everything I need tonight HAHA ... one question though: how do you take the nails off when you want to change them?
Wow! I cannot believe those are not real nails! You do a fantastic job and you seriously just started what is going to be my newest obsession. I'll be tackling this come the weekend. Thanks for sharing :)
Gorgeous!! I'm thinking I'll need to try this soon :) They look amazing!
This is what I do also! If I don't have nails on, I pick my cuticles - gross!
However, I take lazy to a whole new level by painting several pairs at once and then I can change them even quicker!
Question though, in my Kiss kit the nails have tiny numbers on the underside. I have always wondered if you are suppose to glue the number end to the nail or if that is the end you trim? I might have crazy shaped nails because some fit with the number on the nail bed, and others fit the opposite way. Any ideas?
Oh my gosh I used to do this at least once a week for about a year. I had the numbers written down for every nail size so I could do it really quick. I would get compliments all the time - no one knew they were fake! But mine started getting infected so I had to stop :( Probably because I would just pop them off at the end of the week!
Do you soak yours to get them off? They look awesome! I love that color.
holy hell gf!! you're a pro!! your nails do look fabulous, i would have never guessed they were fake either. great job!
I’m impressed! They don’t look fake at all! Pretty color too!
thank you for posting this! I am so tempted to go out and buy the set.
You make it look so EASY. Is the hard part the glue? Can you maybe use one of the nails that go unused and show us how much you put on it? Maybe even put a quarter or something next to the nail in the picture?
Thank you thank you thank you for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE my new nails!! Check out my blog later today to see a picture!
